Arsenal and Chelsea will tread tackles in the finals of this season’s UEFA Europa League.
Arsenal qualified after defeating Valencia 2-4 in their second leg encounter to give the Gunners a 7-3 aggregate win while Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by hard fighting Eintracht Frankfurt. With aggregate scores tied at 2-2, the game went into penalties and the English side won 4-3.
The last time two English clubs played in this competition was in 1972, when the competition was known as UEFA Cup.
In that occasion it was between Tottenham Hotspurs and Wolverhampton Wanderers. It was played over two legs and Spurs won 3-2 on aggregate.
This season’s Europa League finals will take place at the Baku Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan on Wednesday, May 29.
Since Chelsea have already qualified for next season’s UEFA Champions League, Arsenal need to do everything possible within the rules of the game to win the Europa League as the winners will automatically qualify for the Champions League.
It is now certain that both the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League trophies will come to England since Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs will play in the Champions League finals.
