Roberto Firmino opened scoring for the Reds with 15 minutes to the end of the match after a goalless first half before Mohamed Salah made it two in the 83rd minute.
In the other match, Kingsley Coman’s 90th minute goal helped six time champions, Bayern Munich draw 1-1 with RB Salzburg.
Chukwubuike Adamu gave the home side the lead in the 21st minute with a well taken curling effort.
The second leg of both matches will take place on March 8.
