UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Contrasting Fortunes For English Clubs

English champions, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, who came second in the UEFA Champions League last season, were in action tonight on match day two of the group stages of the European flagship competition.

Playing at the Etihad Stadium, it took more than one hour for Manchester City to find the net against Dinamo Zagreb as Raheem Sterling scored on the 66th minute. The Citizens had their lead doubled when Foden scored late into extra time.

However, Tottenham Hotspurs could not withstand the fire-power of Bayern Munich, who destroyed them 2-7.

Son Heung-min’s 12th minute opener for the home side, seem to have infuriated the Germans, who replied almost immediately with Kimmich equalizing three minutes later.

Gnabry scored four goals and Lewandowski scored a brace to complete the routing. Harry Kane’s penalty goal did not becloud the humiliation.

In other matches played tonight, Ronaldo scored as Juventus hammered Bayer Leverkusen 3-0. Lokomotiv Moscow lost 0-2 at home to Atletico Madrid while Atalanta lost 1-2 at home to Shakhtar Donetsk.

Red Star Belgrade came from behind to beat Olympiakos 3-1 while Icardi scored the only goal to give PSG a one goal victory over Galatasaray.
