Arsenal marked their return to the UEFA Champions League, after six years, with a 4-0 demolition of PSV Eindhoven at the Emirate Stadium. At half time, they were already three goals up through goals from Saka, Trossard and Gabriel Jesus.
Skipper, Martin Odegaard made it four in the 70th minute.
PSV’s made few attempts at goal, but did not trouble the Arsenal defence, which did what was necessary to send the Dutch side home empty handed.
The other English side in action tonight was Manchester United, whose performances have been below par so far this season. They travelled to Germany to take on German champions Bayern Munich.
The Red Devils started the game like a house on fire but fell behind just after 28 minutes as former Manchester City forward Leroy Sane put the home side in front. Gnabry made it two before the break.
Haijlund pulled one back for the English side four minutes into the second half to rekindle a come-back hope, only for former Tottenham Hotspur hitman, Harry Kane to score Bayern’s third goal four minutes later from the penalty spot.
Casemiro renewed the hope of a comeback when he scored in the 88th minute but, before he could score United’s third goal in the 95th minute Bayern had already scored their fourth goal.
Galatasaray came from two goals down to draw 10 man FC Copenhagen 2-2.
Sevilla and Lens played out a 1-1 draw as Bellingham’s only goal gave Real Madrid all three points over Union Berlin.
Napoli were 1-2 better than Sorting Braga while Benfica were beaten at home 0-2 by RB Salzburg.
Real Sociedad and Inter Millan played out a 1-1 draw.
