TOA to Build 9,000-Bed Smart Hostel for UNIUYO Students

A non-governmental organization, Titi Oluwadare and Associates (TOA), has unveiled plans to construct a 9,000-bed capacity smart hostel for students of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking at a press briefing in Uyo on Thursday, the African Representative and Head of Projects/Implementation, Amb. Dr. Paul Dowells, said the project will kick off in September and is expected to be completed within 18 months.

According to him, the smart hostel will be the first of its kind in Nigeria, fully digitalized and equipped with modern facilities such as laptops for students, high-speed internet powered by Speednet satellite technology, e-library services, and eco-friendly transportation within the premises.

Dowells also announced other initiatives by the group, including: 500 housing units for UNIUYO staff, a 400-bed guest facility, Speednet satellite communication to drastically cut internet costs, Agricultural projects such as a palm fruit refinery, rice plantation and processing plant, and cassava processing plant in Akwa Ibom among others.

He emphasized that the projects will promote local content development, create massive job opportunities, and align with the Akwa Ibom State Government’s ARISE Agenda.

“The community will be fully digitalized from the gate, with no vehicles allowed except eco-friendly ones. Every student will enjoy access to laptops, steady internet, and world-class learning facilities,” Dowells stated.

He added that Speednet Technology—available only in the United States and Nigeria, with headquarters in Akwa Ibom—will give the state a competitive edge in digital education and attract foreign students.

The press conference was attended by Engr. Frank Oyewale, Dr. Gordons Henry, and Mr. Dominic Okon, among other officials.
