Tinubu Renames Abuja Varsity To Yakubu Gowon University

President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University.

The change of name, which was made public on Monday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, after the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting held at Villa, Abuja.

Yakubu Gowon is Nigeria’s former military head of state. He ruled the country from 1966 to 1975.

“Of course, the process will have to go to the National Assembly for all legislative work in that direction, but FEC has taken that decision to write to the National Assembly to change the name of the University of Abuja.”

The university of Abuja was established in January 1988 under Decree No. 110 of 1992 as amended,as adua-mode university with the mandate to run conventional programmes.

However, the university started fully academic programmes in 1990.

The Minister, also disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has approved free transportation nationwide ahead of Christmas celebration.

He said the Federal Government will commence a nationwide free train services from the 20th of December to 5th of January 2025.

Also disclosed that FEC will be on recess from 18 of December until 6th of January 2025.
