Tinubu Orders Flags at Half-Staff Nationwide to Honour Late President Buhari

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that all national flags across Nigeria be flown at half-staff for seven days in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, in London after a prolonged illness.

The directive, according to a statement issued by Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga, is a mark of respect for Buhari’s enduring legacy of service, sacrifice, and patriotism.

“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” President Tinubu said.

Describing Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman,” Tinubu praised the late President’s commitment to the unity and progress of Nigeria. “We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul,” he added.

President Tinubu also announced that an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) will be held on Tuesday, July 15, in Buhari’s honour. The Federal Government, he confirmed, will accord the former President full state honours.

“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness,” Tinubu concluded.

Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985 and returned decades later as a democratically elected President, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023. His death has drawn widespread condolences from within and outside Nigeria, as the nation mourns the loss of one of its most prominent and enduring leaders.
