The mood was joyful and full of gratitude as staff of the Office of the Secretary to the Abia State Government (SSG), top government officials, and invited guests gathered at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, for the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. The event was part of the 2025 Christmas celebrations.
In his welcome address, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, thanked everyone for coming and said this year’s event was special and timely. He explained that Christmas may mean different things to different people, but its main message is peace, hope, and new beginnings. He added that Abians are seeing real progress in the state.

Prof. Kalu encouraged everyone to use the season to reflect on their duty to make a positive impact wherever they work. He said discipline and commitment are key to success.
He also praised Governor Dr. Alex Otti for leading the state toward positive change. He urged citizens to choose hope over fear and unity over division during the Christmas season. He wished everyone a happy Christmas and a prosperous new year.

The guest preacher, Rev. Dr. Uma Onwuta of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, spoke about the history and spiritual meaning of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. He explained that the Bible readings tell the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of a Messiah, and the birth of Jesus Christ.
Preaching on the theme “Unto Us a Child Is Born, Unto Us a Son Is Given” from Isaiah 9:2, 6, and 9, Rev. Dr. Onwunta explained the difference between being a child of God and becoming a mature “son” of God. He urged Christians to accept God’s love shown through the gift of Jesus Christ, saying this is the true meaning of Christmas.

Comrade Nkechi Nnaemeka Isaac, coordinator of the SSG’s Fellowship Prayer Group, thanked God for His protection and faithfulness and encouraged everyone to continue trusting in Him.
The chairman of the planning committee, Mr. Uma Ibem, gave the vote of thanks. He appreciated the SSG for his support and thanked the staff, management, and all dignitaries for making the event successful.

The nine lessons were read by important officials such as the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba; Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme-Uche; Commissioner for Works, Engr. Don Otumchere Otti; Permanent Secretary of the SSG’s Office, Dr. Godwin Okezuo; and the Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Dr. Christopher Okoro, among others.
