Senate Reconstitutes Key Committees Amid Heightened Security Concerns

In response to Nigeria’s evolving security landscape, the Senate on Tuesday carried out a significant reorganisation of several standing committees, delivering on its earlier commitment to overhaul the National Security and Intelligence Committee.

The announcement was made during plenary by the Senate Selection Committee, chaired by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

Under the new structure, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi of Kebbi State has been appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence. Abdullahi, who previously chaired the Committee on National Planning, replaces Senator Shehu Buba of Bauchi State, who was relieved of the position last week.

Senator Buba has now been reassigned as Chairman of the Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry, following the leadership’s decision to reposition key committees for enhanced performance.

In a related development, Senator Mustafa Musa of Yobe State has been named the new Chairman of the Committee on National Planning, stepping into the role formerly occupied by Senator Abdullahi.

The Senate also made changes to the Committee on Air Force, appointing Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu of Enugu State, as Acting Chairman. Senator Ngwu, who previously served as the committee’s deputy chairman, assumes leadership following the indisposition of the former chair, Senator Akwashiki.

According to the Senate leadership, the reconstitution is aimed at strengthening legislative oversight, improving efficiency and bolstering the nation’s institutional response to emerging security challenges.
