With the new man at the helm of affairs in the Rivers State Police Command, Port Harcourt residents have been speaking on what they expect from the new Commissioner of Police. A cross-section of our respondents said that the new CP Olatunji Disu must prioritize his responsibility of protecting lives and properties. Some of them who spoke to our reporter encouraged the new CP to stay off partisan politics and remain neutral in order not to damage his credentials. Another set of correspondents criticizes the Rivers State Police Command for not doing enough to address security challenges in the State, urging the police to flush out criminals from their hideouts.
Meanwhile, a security analyst Stanley Nsofor is asking the new Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu to take his hands off partisan politics if he must deliver the goods for the people of Rivers State. He warned that keeping an eye on partisan politics will lead to his failure. Stanley Nsofor urges the new CP to concentrate on his major task of securing the State. He further said that another approach that the CP can use to bring down the crime rate in Rivers State is through the mopping up of arms from unauthorized persons. He revealed that there are so many arms in the hands of some state actors and that is why they can perpetuate evil. He said those arms should be collected from them either by amnesty or by head gun approach. Adding that if this is done, the crime rate will be reduced.
The security analyst Stanley Nsofor however, said that there is a need for the improvement of the welfare of those they are sending to the field. Stating that when their welfare is improved, they will be motivated to fight. He also advised the CP on the importance of getting advanced technology in fighting crime. He said it is too bad that up till now people are still fighting crime at an analog level.
