The Dean of the faculty of Humanities, Abia State University Uturu (ABSU), Prof Roseline Ndimele has expressed the need for rescuing the Igbo Language From extinction.
Speaking on the lecture theme “RESCUING THE IGBO LANGUAGE FROM EXTINCTION”: the family and language maintenance, delivered at ABSU auditorium, she stressed the need for effective use of Igbo Language by the native speakers to avoid the language going out of existence.
She further said that igbo language is truly dynamic and goes beyond a means of communication in our society. Adding that, it is an important cultural symbol of our ethnic group and a core value that bonds us together.
She decry non use of Igbo Language among especially the young ones and advised them to promote it’s use or get ready to be dominated and marginalized by other groups.
She urge the government to always conduct language revitalization programmes such as educating and re- educating the people in their language, give them technical and financial support like dictionaries in mother tongue, pedagogical materials, television/radio broadcast in mother tongue as well as train teachers in the language.
