Saraki to IGP Idris: Court cannot stop your probe

Nigerian Senate President Bukola Saraki says Ibrahim Idris, inspector-general of police (IGP), cannot stop the upper legislative chamber from doing its job.

Saraki said this on Thursday after Francis Alimikhena, chairman of the panel set up to probve Idris, told his colleagues that the IGP failed to appear before his committee.

On Wednesday, Alex Iziyon, counsel to the IGP, had told Alimikhena that his client could not appear because the case was in court.

Reacting to Alimikhena’s report, Saraki said as the chief law enforcement officer, Idris should know the law.

“As the chief law enforcement officer, he should know what the law is and he should know that he cannot stop the senate from doing its job. There are several judicial pronouncements on this issue and I expect him to know these things,” Saraki said.

“He should be advised to do the right thing and appear before the senate. If he has nothing to hide, he should appear before the committee like any other Nigerian.”
