The National Assembly joint Committee on Electoral Matters has suggested that idea of cutting salaries of lawmakers and presidency by 30 and 40%,accordingly.
The above suggestion came up during an interaction session led by Senator Shaeafadeen Alli, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, which was held last Monday.
Members that were involved on the discussed matters were the judiciary and representatives from various political parties, focusing on the review and amendment of the Electoral Act 2022.
However , the aim of the move of salary cutting is to reduce government spending .
Still in the interactive session the committee reviewed other suggestions, includes , conducting all elections; presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and State Houses of Assembly, on a single day as improve efficiency and avoid waste of time and efforts,also cost.
In addition , political parties suggested linking voter registration to the National Identity Number (NIN) for improved security and cost efficiency.
They also proposed that the appointment of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman should no longer be the responsibility of the executive branch but rather be an open process advertised to interested candidates.
Alli assured that the joint committee will carry on with INEC and the public making sure that future elections that will be conducted will be less problematic also with stripped – down budget.
