Rivers Women Demand End to Emergency Rule, Mourn Ex President Buhari

A coalition of women under the banner Rivers Women Unite for SIM has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently restore democratic governance in Rivers State, decrying four months of emergency rule as detrimental to peace, development, and inclusive governance.

Speaking during the group’s weekly programme review in Port Harcourt, the women reaffirmed their commitment to peace but insisted that the continued suspension of constitutional structures has left the state in political limbo.

“Emergency rule has stifled grassroots development and silenced voices that democracy was meant to empower, particularly women and youth,” the group said in a statement read by Media Officer, Comrade Glory Sunday. They urged the president to reinstate Governor Siminalayi Fubara and allow constitutional processes to resume without further delay.

While acknowledging the role of key stakeholders in maintaining peace during the political impasse, the women noted that true stability can only be achieved through the full restoration of democratic institutions.

In a related development, the group extended condolences to President Tinubu, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, and the family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 82. They praised his legacy and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.

The group called on all parties to prioritize national unity and constitutional order as Nigeria navigates this critical period.
