Rivers State to commence payment of minimum wage by May

A chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Rivers state ,Beatrice Otubo, has expressed optimism that the Rivers State Government will be among the first to implement the N30,000.00 minimum wage.
Mrs Otubo said Governor Nyesom Wike has promised workers in the state that the government will not hesitate to implement the new minimum wage, adding that the indication she got from the national body reveals that the new pay will commence in May.

“We were told that it will commence by May. He promised us before now that anything the Federal Government is paying, he will pay. He is a man of integrity and I believe him. Rivers state workers will be one of the first states that will receive this new national minimum wage”, she stated.

Otubo who thanked Governor Nyesom Wike for the level of work done at the Labour House, begged that the state secretariat be renovated as promised.

“He promised to work on the Labour House last May. We are calling on him to make do his promise. Let him put the contractors on notice again, so that they can go back to work so as to complete the renovation.
“Many workers are there, and that is the eye of government. People coming into Rivers State will want to see the Rivers State Secretariat, it should be in a good state”, she stated.
