Rivers Schools Resumption: Don Advices On Exams Questions

While some States resumed classes today, others including Rivers State are yet to announce a date for resumption.

Our reporter visited some public schools in Port Harcourt City Local Government independently and observe cleaning activities going on in the school.

Principal of Federal Government College (FGC) Rumuokoro Iyang Ukpeng spoke on some measures they have put in place.

She said they used to have 40 persons in a class, but they have reduced the number to 20 in a class.

 

Ukpeng  also said that facemasks and sanitizers have been provided, revealing that they have two nurses, and have trained and Sensitisatised all parents and students for them to be aware of all the protocols before resumption of schools.

The principal of FGC Rumuokoro Mrs Ukpong also said the teachers will utilise the two weeks given to them to prepare for the WAEC.

” We are going to have afternoon and night prep. And on Saturday there will be prep. I have made up my mind to be here to monitor and supervise them. Because with the social distancing, there will not be copying. It will be what you have put in your brain that will come out. With all these, they will pass” she stated.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) Rivers State chapter, said private schools in the State are ready for exit class to resume.

The chairperson of NAPPS in the State Roberta Tamunoteken Dosunmu told our reporter that private schools have put up the requirement needed to keep the students safe, and the students are ready for the WAEC exams.

However, our reporter cut up with some students in SS3 classes who said two weeks is not enough for them to revise for the examination.

A professor of education Sunday Ossai said questions for the the exit exams should be set with knowledge that students have been away from classes for long do to Corona Virus pandemic.

” Every school is suppose to consider these students and so the curriculum should reflect that. Certainly, it will have effect on them. Their performance will be low. The examination should equally consider the level of questions that goes to these students”

The professor also asked the government to regulate the financial demands by some private schools following report that some schools are asking candidates to pay their complete fees for the outgoing session before they will be allowed to sit for the exams. He also said the Corona Virus pandemic has actually affected peoples finances.
