Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that his administration has recorded significant strides in the health sector in the last two and a half years.
Speaking at the Government House in Port Harcourt, the governor highlighted key achievements of his administration, including the revitalisation of health facilities, the establishment of a state health insurance scheme, and the recruitment of over 2,000 health workers to strengthen manpower and improve service delivery.
Fubara said the government had revived and expanded several previously abandoned health facilities, notably the zonal hospitals in Bori, Omoku, Ahoada and Degema. He described the Ahoada Zonal Hospital as a 105-bed secondary healthcare facility with the capacity to meet the medical needs of residents within its catchment area.
Beyond secondary healthcare, the governor noted that his administration has prioritised primary healthcare services to ensure that citizens, particularly those in rural communities, have access to quality medical care. He disclosed that approval was granted for the remodelling of 153 Primary Healthcare Centres across the state to enhance their functionality and service delivery.
Addressing mental health concerns, Fubara said the state government introduced mental health services at the primary healthcare level in response to increasing stress and economic hardship among residents. According to him, the initiative is aimed at ensuring timely and appropriate mental health support for citizens.
At the tertiary level, the governor revealed that the Intensive Care Unit of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital has been upgraded and equipped with modern medical facilities, including monitors, ventilators and scanners. He described the improvements as massive and unprecedented.
On staff welfare, Fubara disclosed that over 400 staff members of the teaching hospital have been promoted, while an additional 500 personnel were recruited to further strengthen the institution’s capacity.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of every resident of the state.
