A renowned gynaecologist John Ikimalo has urged the Government to include infertility management into the Primary Health Care to address squarely the social stigma associated with the disease.
Professor Ikimalo in his inaugural lecture at the university of Port Harcourt over the weekend said it is under ground that the awareness of the assisted reproductive technology is fast growing, following its establishment at both public and private hospitals.
” government should now in cooperate infertility management, looking for the fruit of the womb into Primary Health Care. And the National Health Insurance Scheme should also include that.
Because sometimes it is said to be a social disease to a woman, a man or couple that have not have a child. There is nothing else that can give them happiness. They just think it is hopeless. And in that hopelessness, they delay looking for help until they are now advance in age. Because age affects fertility very seriously”
Professor John Ikimalo also advised the youths to adopt preventive measures in their sexual lives, to reduce the increase incidences of infertility in the society.
” younger ones should know that they should preserve their reproductive tract by avoiding these things that we know are common causes of infertility itself. Which is infection in our environment, sexually transmitted infection is one of them. So i advice that young girls should utilise the condom, which apart from preventing unwanted pregnancy also protects against sexually transmitted infection.
