Rivers: FIDA Decries High Rate Of Domestic Violence

The chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyer (FIDA) in Rivers State, Adata Bio Briggs says complain of domestic violence at their centre is low. Mrs Bio Briggs in an interview with our reporter said rather complain about abandoning or failing to provide for the family is now on the increase.

Mrs Bio Briggs further explained that complain they have received between last month and this month, basically deals with failure to provide, which is also a form of violence. Adding that when you are not providing for your child or spouse it is a form of violence.

FIDA chairperson also revealed that if twenty people visits them in a day, ten of them will be failure to provide for the family. She said in some cases, it is related to the economy and that the man is not capable at that particular time. While in some other cases, they have situations where the man is capable but he is very reluctant to provide.

The chairperson of FIDA in Rivers State also said that there is a rise of abuse of underage children by the parent or caregivers. She explained that a lot of children below the ages of ten are being defiled either in schools, churches or even at home. She revealed that they have defiled cases from Bonny, Ahoada, Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor, Asari-Toru, Okrika, and Ogu-bolo, adding that most of them are already in court.

Mrs Bio Briggs also frown at the increase rate of child stealing in the State. She said children are being stolen from shops, homes, streets and from churches. She advised parents to be careful with who they keep their children with adding that nobody is trustworthy anymore. She revealed that a particular case that is in the court now is about a pregnant woman who stole a child, and sold the child to their syndicate in Ahuda.

FEDA chairperson in Rivers State however call on the security personnel to do more in tracking those stealing children in the State.
