Reopening of Schools:No going back on Aug 10

 

Abia state government has reiterated that there is no going back on the Aug 10 school resumption for exit classes.

The Commissioner for Education in the state, Dr Kanelechi Nwangwa who stated this in an interview with National Ambassador during the Governor’s summit with TC chairmen, Education Secretaries of the 17 Local Government Areas and other important stakeholders at the International Conference Centre Umuahia,said the proposed date for schools resumption in the state is realizable and achievable,hence there is no going back.

According to the Commissioner,part of the activities to ensure a successful resumption,neccesitatedthe meeting with the state governor and relevant stakeholders.

He said all TC chairmen and Education secretaries across the LGAs should cooperate with the Ministry of Education and Health respectively,to ensure public and private schools are cleared and fumigated before the resumption date, adding that the testing of Covid 19 status of the teachers would also be done,so that it won’t be the case of teachers infecting students.

Hon Nwangwa maintained that the health of the Abia children remains paramount to the state government, hence the government promised to provide thermometers for testing, facemasks,hand washing stations,sanitizers among other materials suitable in containing the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

While pleading for Area/Zonal Inspectors of Education, as well as the Education secretaries to be dutiful in pursuing this course, by making sure both public and private schools observe the outlined covid 19 guidelines for resumption,said they should not compromise in the discharge of their duty, assuring parents and guardians of safety of their wards as they return to school.

The Dean of Education Secretaries and Education secretary for Ugwunnagbo LGA, Hon Patroit Iheanacho, assured the government of their commitment, saying they know the importance of children returning to school at this period of covid 19 and the implication of not observing government’s protocol to the later, therefore they would not disappoint the confidence reposed on them.

The Transition Committee chairman of Obingwa LGA, Hon Kingsley Nnaji who also doubles as the ALGON chairman, on behalf of his colleagues pledged their total support to this exercise, pointing out that students have been at home for so long because of the pandemic and now that educational activities is gradually Kick-starting in the state, the TC chairmen would not stop,until it is achieved.

Hon Nnaji stated that they would not only monitor the level of compliance to the covid 19 rules in schools,but would also contribute to the safety of the Abia child by providing protective materials.

He revealed that they would be forming a team in each LGA, comprising of health officers, education secretaries and other relevant stakeholders in the case of any eventuality.
