The Wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu, has described the choice of Abia State by the Forum of Local Government Nurses and Midwifery of Nigeria for their conference with the theme ‘Mobilizing the public and private sector towards universal health coverage as beneficial to Abians.

Speaking with National Ambassador on her award as number one nurse in Abia at the association’s gala night held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, Mrs. Ikpeazu, said that qualitative healthcare is a universal right, therefore it is a responsibility for us all to work collectively to achieve it.

The Abia First Lady maintained that good health remains the basic platform for the achievement of all other social development goals, because it ensures human well-being and productivity.

However, the Gov. Wife, charged the Forum to ensure that the outcome of their deliberations makes the health care delivery systems great in Nigeria and thanked them for awarding her the number one nurse in Abia.

While the Special Assistant to the Governor on primary health care, Mrs. Uloma Anosike stated that the focus of the conference is to reduce the mortality rate across the country, the Commissioner for Health who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Reverend. Ernest Osuji and his Information counterpart, Chief John Okiyi, revealed that it is the requests of Abia government that the nurses serve with respect and empathy adding that the state will always accord nurses and Midwifery the benefits they deserves.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the forum, Comrade Obafemi Agbede, earlier explained that the forum was formed in 1996, with the objective of providing quality health care services to our patients and to promote the skills of the Nigeria nurses and Midwifery.

We have also in the limits of our touring the state learn of the wife of the Governor’s contributions to health care delivery in the state especially through her pet project the Vicar Hope Foundation, that is extremely commendable and we appreciate her for that.

Another thing is the shortage of nurses in our employ, if we are going to achieve the universal health coverage for our country Nigeria, there would be urgent need to employ more nurses without which we cannot make the needed impact in our health sector.

However, Obafemi, appeals to the state government to look into other issues undermining nurses in the state and resolve it.

Others who are  recognized with community service award were, Princess Uloma Anosike, Mrs. Florence Mbaogu, and Lady Nkechi Anuribe.
