Robert Lewandowski scored a goal and provided an assist as Poland brighten their chances of qualifying for the knockout stage with a 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.
Recall that Lewandowski missed a penalty in their goalless draw with Mexico.
Today he atoned with a great performance. Six minutes from half time Piotr Zelinski scored from Lewandowski’s cut back to put Poland in front.
Just before half-time Saudi Arabia were awarded a penalty when Krystian Bielik fouled Saleh Al Shehri. Feras Al Brikans spot kick was stopped by Wojciech Szczesny in goal for Poland.
Eight minutes to the end of the match, Lewandowski capitalized on Abdelulelah Al Malki’s error to confirm that Poland will take all three points.
Emotions overwhelmed Lewandowski as he scored his first World Cup goal in four matches.
This result has thrown group C wide open.
Later tonight Argentina will hope to return to winning ways when they face Mexico.
Earlier, in group D, Australia bounce back from their defeat to France to defeat Tunisia by a lone goal.
The Carthage Eagles’ last group game is a must win, but it is going to be against defending champions France. A lot will depend on the outcome of the match between France and Denmark. A victory for France will guarantee qualification, which might make them rest some of their key players.
