Police Lead Environmental Clean-Up at Rumuokoro Flyover

Residents and commuters around the busy Rumuokoro axis witnessed an unusual yet commendable scene as officers of the Nigeria Police Force carried out a sanitation exercise at the Rumuokoro flyover.

The operation, which took place in the early hours of the day, saw uniformed officers clearing heaps of refuse that had accumulated along the roadside and in drainage areas beneath the flyover. Armed with shovels, brooms, and other cleaning tools, the officers worked diligently to remove waste materials ranging from plastic debris to household refuse.

The Rumuokoro flyover, a major transit hub linking several parts of Port Harcourt, has long been plagued by indiscriminate waste disposal. The situation has raised concerns among residents about environmental health risks, blocked drainage systems, and the overall aesthetic condition of the area.

Speaking during the exercise, a supervising officer noted that the clean-up initiative was part of a broader effort to promote environmental responsibility and community hygiene. He emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility and urged residents, traders, and commuters to desist from indiscriminate dumping of waste.

Passersby and local traders expressed surprise and appreciation at the sight of police officers engaging in such an exercise, describing the gesture as both inspiring and necessary. Some residents also called for sustained efforts and stronger collaboration between government agencies and the public to ensure the cleanliness of public spaces.

Environmental advocates have highlighted the need for effective waste management systems and increased public awareness to prevent a recurrence of such conditions.

The clean-up exercise serves as a reminder that safeguarding the environment requires collective action, discipline, and a commitment to responsible waste disposal practices.
