PDP Governors Drag Buhari Over Failure To Sign Electoral Amendment Bill

 

 

Governor’s of the Peoples’ Democractic Party, (PDP) has accused President Mohammadu Buhari of refusing to sign the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law which would help to fulfill Nigeria’s yearning for a free and credible polls.

 

This is after 6 failed attempts in seven years at passing the the Electoral Act Amendment Bill which the National Assembly transmitted a re-worked version of the bill to President Buhari on Jan. 31, 2022.

 

The President had cited insecurity, the cost of conducting direct primaries and infringement on the rights of Nigerians to participate in governance as his reasons for declining accent.

But the PDP Governor’s Forum in a Communique issued at the end of their meeting in Yenagoa Bayelsa State and read by their Vice Chairman,Governor Okezie Ikpeazu urged the President to immediately sign the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law.

 

The Governor’s noted that waiting to run out the 30 days is yet another sign of unwillingness by President Buhari to give Nigeria a reformed Electoral framework.

 

The Governor’s insisted that If there are still misgivings on any aspect of the Bill Amendments, it should be introduced at a later stage.

The People’s Democratic Party Governor’s Forum reviewed the state of the nation, the readiness of the PDP to rescue the nation from APC misrule and congratulated their party for winning 43 out of 62 Councillorship positions in the just concluded Abuja Area Council election results.

 

They added that inspite of improvements in the conduct of elections, the Gwagwalada and Abuja Area Council results show that manipulations are still possible and urged INEC to tighten all observed loopholes to further improve on the functioning of the BIVAS Machine for future elections.
