The Organization for Women in Science for the Development World (OWSD) has charged female scientists to acquire new knowledge in order to build and advance their careers.
The Coordinator, OWSD, Umudike branch, Dr. Mabel Ifeoma Onwuka who gave the charge yesterday during their meeting at National Roots Crops and Research Institute (NRCRI), Umudike, Abia state, urged them to take advantage of their platforms for mentoring, networking and knowledge sharing to grow in their careers.

The acting Director, Center for Gender, Child and Youth Development, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), Abia state, added that when women scientists are properly equipped with requisite tools, they make more impacts and become more relevant in their work places and Nigeria at large.
In her lecture entitled: ‘Making yourself relevant at your work place and nation as a woman scientist’, the foremost first female Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), MOUAU, Prof. Joy Chioma Nwabueze, charged women to stay relevant in their field of study by possessing modern tools, skills and knowledge needed for success.
The first female professor of Statistics in Nigeria, who encouraged young women to take a career in sciences added that science is valued by the society.
She maintained that basic human needs are solved and human living standard are improved through the proper application of scientific knowledge.

The erudite Professor further enjoined female scientists to work as a team and take their research/Academic endeavours seriously in order to make a mark and produce their desired results.
In their separate remarks, Prof Ifeoma Irene Ijeh of MOUAU and Dr. Tessy Madu, a Director at NRCRI advised women to build their careers through setting achievable goals and subjecting themselves to be mentored.

They also urged them to be diligent and get involved as good team players in their various work places.
Highlights of the programme was the announcement of the fifteen beneficiaries of 2023 OWSD Umudike Conference grant, 2023 first Cohorts Mentors and Mentees of the OWSD Mentoring programme among others.
