Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, today, joined members of the State Judiciary to kick off the commencement of the 2023/2024 legal year with a cocktail/dinner party.
The commencement of the law legal year presents an opportunity for the judiciary to take a retrospect and chart a new course for the future.
Present at the event include the wife of the Governor, Lady Priscilla Otti, President Customary Court of Appeal, Hon Justice Okey Nwamuo, Commissioner for Justice Attorney General, Barr Ikechukwu Uwana, immediate past Chief Judge of the State, Hon Justice Arise Ogwe, Judges of the federal and state high court, visiting Judges from Anambra and Imo and Former Chief of Army Staff, Gen Onyeabo Ihejirika.
Others include; The secretary to the state Government, Kenneth Kanu, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Members of the State Executive Council, Chairmen of the different Bar Associations and Judges from various jurisdictions.
Speaking at the event, Governor Otti while congratulating them for the beginning of the 2023/2024 legal year expressed optimism that the new year would come with greater things for Abia judiciary.
Governor Otti commended the existing relationship between the Executive and Judicial arms of government and urged them not to relent in their support for the present administration.
The Governor while giving a brief scorecard of his administration’s effort in piloting the affairs of the state, pledged commitment to taking Abia to greater heights.
He noted that contrary to media reports, Abia State under the present administration is safe and habitable for citizens and investors alike to do their legitimate businesses.
In her remarks, the Chief Judge described the event as first of its kind in the history of the state and commended the Governor for his dedication to the welfare of the judiciary.
The Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the state, Hon Ikechukwu Uwana described the theme of the 2023/2024 Legal year, “Independence Of The Judiciary; A Gateway To Democracy”, as apt.
Uwana said the importance of the Independence of the Judiciary in a democratic society cannot be overemphasized adding that Governor Otti has ensured that the judiciary takes its pride of place since his assumption of office as the 5th democratically elected governor of the state.
He expressed hope that the partnership between the judiciary and the Executive arms of government would birth a hallmark of progress for the state.
