Osusu Umuikpeghi Residents Hail Abia Govt Over Prepaid Meter Installation

Residents of Osusu Umuikpeghi in Ahiaba Nbu Autonomous Community, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, have expressed joy and appreciation to the Abia State Government following the installation of prepaid electricity meters in their community.

The initiative, which is part of the state’s efforts to improve electricity access and end exploitative billing practices, has been described by the people as a “game changer.” For years, residents lamented overestimated bills and frequent harassment by officials of the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA).

With the prepaid meters now in place, households can enjoy a transparent “pay-as-you-go” system, giving them control over their power consumption. Community members say the development has not only brought financial relief but also restored dignity to many families.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Charles Ukandu commended the governor for taking swift action to address the long-standing challenges of the community. “This is a huge relief. We no longer have to quarrel over inflated bills. The government has shown it listens and cares about the ordinary people,” he said.

Another resident, Lady Ogadimma Friday, recalled how she was embarrassed publicly by electricity agents over disputed bills. She noted that the prepaid meters have ended such humiliations. “Now I pay only for what I use, and nobody can harass me again. This is fairness, and I thank the governor for making it possible,” Ogadimma said.

The project has further strengthened residents’ confidence in the state government. Many community members pledged their political support ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that their votes would be a way of showing appreciation for the intervention. “The best way to say thank you is to vote him in again in 2027,” a resident said.

Political observers note that such people-oriented initiatives could boost the governor’s popularity in Abia communities, particularly in rural areas that often feel neglected in terms of infrastructure and development.

For Osusu Umuikpeghi, the prepaid meter installation is more than an energy reform — it is a sign of responsive governance that touches lives directly. The community now looks forward to more projects that will improve their welfare and deepen their trust in the present administration.
