Osinbajo arrives Benue, condoles with flood victims

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has arrived in Benue State to meet and condole with victims of floods that hit the state recently.

The Vice President was received on Wednesday at the Markudi Airport by the state governor, Samuel Ortom, and other top government officials.

Professor Osinbajo, who was on the visit on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari, said the Federal Government would support the state in providing more relief materials for the flood victims.

Following heavy rains in the state capital which left many homeless, the Benue State Emergency Management Agency had set up a camp for displaced persons at the International Market in Makurdi.

On his part, President Buhari had also directed the National Emergency Management Agency to immediately commence the mobilisation and deployment of resources to support the victims.

NEMA officials have been on the ground to assess the situation and provide relief materials such as food and non-food items to affected persons.

Some residents told newsmen in Makurdi that while the flood waters were receding in many areas, there is still a lot of work to be done. in relief intervention to support the affected communities in the short-term, and in rebuilding and reconstruction in the medium and long-term.

The government, however, said it acknowledged the efforts of the private sector, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and citizens who have been mobilised voluntarily to the aid of affected persons and communities.
