The Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Prof. Christopher Okoro Kalu, has advised students to stay focused and disciplined in pursuing their goals. He warned that distractions could affect their future.
Okoro gave this advice during an orientation programme held for students ahead of the school’s 32nd matriculation ceremony, scheduled for March 21, 2026.
Speaking on the theme, “The Journey to Self-Discovery: Knowing Your Purpose Early,” the Rector said gaining admission into the polytechnic should be seen as a chance for personal growth, not just a way to get certificates.
He stressed that true success comes from consistent effort. He encouraged students to discover their purpose early and remain committed to it.
“The world does not reward certificates alone; it rewards value,” he said.
“Certificates may open doors, but the value you create will determine your success.”
Okoro urged students to think deeply about who they are and what they want to achieve. He said self-awareness will help them understand the problems they can solve in society.
According to him, achieving purpose requires hard work, dedication, and creativity. He added that practical skills and competence are often more important than academic grades.
“Purpose is not just a wish; it requires hard work. In the end, your skills will speak louder than your grades,” he said.
While responding to students’ questions, the Rector restated the school’s policy against forcing students to buy textbooks or any form of exploitation.
He assured students that the management is committed to protecting their rights and welfare, in line with the state government’s development plans.
Okoro also promised to maintain a peaceful and supportive learning environment in the school. He encouraged students to take part in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), describing it as an important civic responsibility.
