Oborevwori inspects Warri Stadium amidst cheers, assures timely and quality completion

As part of ongoing efforts to revamp Delta State’s sports infrastructure and promote athletic development, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori recently inspected the ongoing reconstruction of the Warri Township Stadium.

Addressing journalists during the inspection, Governor Oborevwori expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to timely and high-standard project delivery.

He lauded the contractor’s capacity to deliver a world-class facility, noting the positive impact of the project on local economic activities, with over 176 youths currently employed on-site.

“We are confident that the contractor will deliver on time. A new indoor sports hall is under construction, and residents are already benefiting from the renovation. Once completed, Warri people will be proud, and visitors will enjoy a modern facility”, the governor stated.

Governor Oborevwori highlighted the strategic importance of the stadium, saying it would serve as a hub for sports and entertainment while reinforcing Warri’s reputation as an emerging sports destination, especially with Warri Wolves Football Club’s recent qualification for the Premier League.

He disclosed that although the initial plan was to construct a new stadium, the government opted for a comprehensive renovation of the existing facility due to limited available land. He further revealed that a hospitality suite is also being considered as part of the modernization.

Key facilities under reconstruction include the steelworks of the main bowl, a FIFA-standard football pitch, underground drainage systems, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and more.

The governor emphasized that his visit signified a crucial step in holding contractors accountable and ensuring the delivery of quality work within the scheduled timeline.

Speaking during the visit, Engr. Olarenwaju Adeleke of Peculiar Concern Limited, the project contractor, assured that the stadium would be completed on time.

“We are three months into the project and have completed 100 percent of the steel fabrication and erection, except for a few open areas. Work is currently ongoing on the pitch”, he said.

Engr. Adeleke projected that the running track and pitch grassing would be completed by December. However, he clarified that while the stadium might not be ready for the current Premier League season, it is expected to be fully operational for the next.
