The Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on leaders and elders of the Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo ethnic nationalities to promote peace and unity, warning that divisiveness and social media incitement threaten the region’s stability and development.
Speaking during the funeral service of the late Mrs. Grace Agbolayah at the African Church, Central Missionary Diocese, Warri, Governor Oborevwori emphasized that unity is vital for sustainable progress, not only in Warri but across the entire state.
“In all, what we need is unity. I have witnessed crisis and I know its consequences. People are using social media to cause problems, this must stop. I want to develop Warri because this is my home, and some of the young people today have not enjoyed the Warri we experienced back then”, the Governor stated.

Recounting personal experiences from past crises in the city, the Governor revealed that his father’s home was spared during unrest simply because it had the inscription “Sheriff Papa House”, while others nearby were destroyed. He described this as a stark lesson on the devastating impact of communal conflict.
“Warri dey sweet me for body”, the Governor said, expressing his deep-rooted connection to the city. “I am a man with street credibility and local content, not from the diaspora. Now that I am Governor, I am a Governor for all, and I will not take sides”.
Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to accelerated development and inclusive governance.
“I want to do more for Deltans. I don’t want to fail. I will continue to show love to the people and deep respect for our leaders”, he assured.
He also urged restraint among critics, particularly those outside the state, cautioning them against using social media to incite division. Parents and guardians were also called upon to educate their children on responsible online behavior.

Paying tribute to the late Mrs. Agbolayah, the Governor described her as a woman of faith, integrity, and strong family values.
“Mama came, saw, and conquered. She served God faithfully and raised her children well, with one now a bishop. My prayer is that the wisdom with which Mama raised you will also guide you in raising your children”, he said.
Earlier in his sermon titled “Fight a Good Fight” (II Timothy 4:7), His Eminence Julius Olayinka Abbe, Primate of the African Church, encouraged Christians to be beacons of peace, accountability, and nation-building in a troubled world.
He praised Mrs. Agbolayah as a devoted Christian whose legacy of service and Godliness will endure, and commended Governor Oborevwori for his support to the family, including the appointment of Dr. Toyin Agbolayah as Special Adviser on Community Development.
“Your Excellency, you are doing a great job, and from the way you are going, Delta State will soon compete with Lagos in infrastructure. The people of Delta love you and we pray that God strengthens you to do more”, the Primate stated.
The event was graced by several high-ranking officials, including , Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly; Rt. Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, Member representing Warri Federal Constituency; Hon. Agbateyiniro Weyinmi, Chairman, Warri South Local Government Council; Members of the State Executive Council and other top government functionaries.
