The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has launched a campaign against Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) across the 31 Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State.
The State Director of the Agency, Mr. Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, told newsmen in Uyo on Wednesday.
He described HMPV as a respiratory virus causing flu-like symptoms, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
He said the symptoms include cough, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, and shortness of breath; wheezing in severe cases. In children, they are prone to bronchiolitis or pneumonia, and in adults, the symptoms can worsen chronic conditions like asthma.
“It is spread through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, as well as direct contact with contaminated surfaces,” he added.
The director identified those at risk as children under 5 years old, elderly individuals, especially those with underlying health conditions, and immunocompromised patients.
The statement read in part, “We wish to use this medium, in line with our mandate, to advise citizens to wear nose masks always, especially in crowded places, airport premises, practice good hand hygiene, avoid close contact with sick persons, and ensure vaccinations for other preventable respiratory diseases like influenza and COVID-19.”
He said there was no known cure for HMPV and advised residents to observe the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control protocols as directed recently.
