The Delta State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has expressed optimism about the future of healthcare delivery in the state, attributing it to the impactful policies and investments of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Governor at Government House, Asaba, recently ,the NMA delegation led by its Chairman, Dr. Israel Adaigho, praised the state government’s achievements across the health sector.
Dr. Adaigho commended the administration’s strides in primary healthcare, the Delta State Contributory Health Scheme, and improvements in maternal and child health through mobile clinics. He also noted the strengthening of health institutions across the state.
Among the notable achievements highlighted were:
Establishment of the College of Health Technology, Ovrode; College of Medical Sciences, Southern Delta University, Ozoro; and the College of Nursing, Onicha-Uku.;renovation of over 150 primary healthcare centres;provision of critical medical equipment, including MRI machines and 25 units of 4D ultrasound scanners.
Delta State’s pioneering payment of medical residency training funds ahead of the Federal Government,among others.
Beyond healthcare, Dr. Adaigho acknowledged Governor Oborevwori’s broader developmental efforts, including the completion of the Ughelli–Asaba Road dualisation;construction of flyovers in Effurun and Warri, and cearance of pension backlogs for state and local government retirees.

He also drew attention to challenges still confronting the sector, especially manpower shortages, and assured the governor of the Association’s willingness to continue supporting health sector reforms.
In his response, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori thanked the NMA for its support and for the sacrifices made by medical professionals who continue to serve in Nigeria despite the temptation to emigrate.
He cited some of his administration’s recent interventions, including:
Procurement of eight dialysis machines, three each for Asaba Specialist Hospital and Central Hospital, Warri, and two for DELSUTH, Oghara;acquisition of three MRI machines, one for each senatorial district.
Reaffirming his support for medical professionals, the Governor stated, “It is better for our doctors to work in Nigeria and earn their respect than to go abroad and become care assistants.”
Governor Oborevwori also assured that the state would look into the requests presented by the Association, reaffirming his commitment to equipping Delta hospitals with medical facilities comparable to those in developed countries. He further approved the release of a bus to the NMA to support its operations.
As part of the visit, the NMA presented a Champion of Medical Excellence Award to the Governor in recognition of his contributions to the sector.
