The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has taken measures to close Nigeria’s border with Niger Republic in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu. The Acting Comptroller-General (C-G) of Customs, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, visited the Ilela border today to ensure the prompt and thorough implementation of President Tinubu’s directive, which was a collective decision by leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following the recent upheaval in Niger.
During his visit to the Illela Border Station, the CGC expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance exhibited by the residents. He emphasized that the measure was not intended to create hardship for Nigerians but to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and social stability, considering the current state of uncertainty in the neighboring Niger Republic.
Responding to questions from journalists about the impact of the border closure on Customs’ revenue generation mandate, the CGC assured that the Service had taken proactive steps to address the situation strategically. He reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to protecting the citizens’ well-being and businesses, with the optimism that the borders would soon reopen, allowing Nigerian businesses to thrive once again.
As the ECOWAS Chairman, President Tinubu is keen on promoting regional trade and recognizes that peace is essential for achieving this goal. The CGC’s mission was to reinforce President Tinubu’s directive and seek the support of traditional rulers and stakeholders in the border communities.
Addressing stakeholders at the Illela border, Alhaji Aminu Dan-Iya, Chairman of the Association of Customs License Agents in the town, urged residents and stakeholders to understand that the border closure decision was for their benefit and there was no need to panic.
In another engagement, the CGC paid a courtesy visit to Sarkin Gobir of Gwadabawa, Alhaji Lawali Zayyana, seeking his support towards achieving the mandates of the Service. During the meeting, the CGC acknowledged the sustained support of the traditional ruler and commended his efforts in promoting a cordial relationship between the community and Customs operatives.
In response, the Sarkin Gobir of Gwadabawa welcomed the CGC and his entourage, expressing his support for a successful tenure. He assured the CGC of his Emirate’s unwavering backing and pledged to foster harmony among the residents.
President Tinubu’s directive, enforced by the Nigeria Customs Service, aims to ensure regional stability and facilitate a peaceful environment for trade and economic activities. The closure of the border with Niger Republic is part of a concerted effort by ECOWAS leaders to address the recent political developments in the neighboring country.
