Abia State Government has pledged to partner with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in building a more inclusive, informed, and progressive society.
Governor Alex Otti made the pledge during the 34th Anniversary Celebration of NAWOJ, Abia State Chapter, held at the Police Officers’ Mess, Umuahia.
The Governor, represented by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, commended NAWOJ for blazing the trail and transforming the media landscape in Abia and Nigeria at large.
He assured the Association of the Government’s continued support in promoting press freedom, building the capacity of women journalists, and protecting their rights to operate without fear or intimidation.
The Governor lauded the founding mothers of NAWOJ and members for their role in holding leaders accountable and amplifying the voices of the voiceless.
“This occasion reminds us of the journey of intelligent and passionate women who have dared to speak truth to power, hold leaders accountable, and amplify the voices of the voiceless in our society.
“We recognize and commend your pivotal role in nation-building. You have shown that journalism is not just about reporting news; it is also about shaping public opinion, influencing policies, and driving positive societal change”, he stated.
Governor Otti further highlighted his administration’s commitment to gender inclusion, revealing that 67 percent of Permanent Secretary appointments in the State have been given to women.
Also speaking, the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Maureen Aghukwa, emphasized that women’s voices are now being heard in national discourse.

The Chairman of the occasion and Rector of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Dr. Christopher Okoro, described the theme of the event, “Empowering Women’s Voices: 34 Years of Trailblazing Journalism”, as timely.
He noted that women are no longer relegated to the background but are now at the forefront of national issues.
Delivering the anniversary lecture titled “Eliminating Obnoxious Cultural Practices Against Women“, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs. Becky Oguama, identified harmful practices such as female genital mutilation and early child marriage as challenges still facing women.
She called for the domestication of local laws to protect women and children.
In her welcome address, the State Chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Josephine Ogwo, said the association is celebrating 34 years of trailblazing journalism and unwavering dedication to amplifying women’s voices, promoting their rights, and empowering them to take their rightful place in society.
She noted that NAWOJ has achieved remarkable milestones, including the establishment of the NAWOJ Standard School and various community-based enlightenment programs.
“We reaffirm our commitment to promoting women’s empowerment, protecting press freedom, and advancing the interests of women journalists.
“We will continue to provide a platform for women to share their stories, amplify their voices, and showcase their talents”, she stated.
Comrade Ogwo also expressed appreciation to the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, for championing the cause of women, girls, and the vulnerable and pledged NAWOJ’s continued support in the fight against gender-based violence.
