Deputy coordinator, National Association Of Nigeria Students zone B David Barireka has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to improve the safety and welfare provisions for National Youth Service Corps NYSC members ahead of the rescheduled elections this Saturday.
Comrade Bariereka said the call became necessary due to the heartbreaking photos that circulated on social media on some NYSC members who were subjected to sleep outside on the eve of the postponed election.
While appealing to the core members to see their plight as a sacrifice to the nation, he said the student community will not take it lightly if core members face the same treatment this Saturday
” they have been involved in the electoral process. I don’t think they should treat them like that because the work has to be done. I want to use this opportunity to call on the leadership of INEC to ensure adequate security of core members. Because from what we saw last Saturday, accommodation was not taking care of, not to talk of security. They have to look into all these things and make sure it is adequately taking care of ahead of Saturday” he stated.
The National Association Of Nigeria Student zone B coordinator further appealed to core members to be vigilante as they go about their duties on Saturday, and shun any form of election misconduct.
” I also want to use this medium to say that they should remain peaceful and calm. It is actually not enough, but the work has to be done. to also urge them to be very careful and stay out of trouble. Be vigilante, it is not worth dying for ” he stated.
You would recall that last weekend photos of stranded core members sleeping in an open field circulated on social media. The photos had sprang outrage on social media with many celebrities of Nigeria reaching out to help some the stranded NYSC members.
