All is now set for the National Apex of Nigerian Farmers Cooperative Societies LTD (NANFACOS), to hold its first national election that will bring on bound the national executive committee members that will oversee the activities of cooperative societies in the various states of Nigeria.
The election which was scheduled to hold April 7, was rescheduled because of the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic to Sept 17.
The chairman of the Electoral Committee,Mallam Ibrahim Dankuwa, during a meeting in Abuja, announced the new date of the election, advising contestants to sought out themselves and round up with their campaigns so as to meet up with the date for the election.
Interacting with newsmen in Umuahia, the chairman of the Abia State Apex of Farmers Cooperative Society LTD (AFCOSOL), Chief Uzoma Nwogwugwu, who is currently acting as the National President of NANFACOS, commended President Muhammadu Buhari, for his determination to make Agriculture the mainstay of the economy, adding that his administration has also given the association a go-ahead by the Department of Cooperative, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to conduct its national general election.
According to Chief Nwogwugwu, the essence of having a national body and viable executive is for them to push the needs of farmers, attract funds for Agriculture interms of loans and grants, as well as other necessary things for the industry to grow.
He revealed that the NANFACOS was established to compliment the giant efforts of the federal government on the area of Agric business, regarding to crops and livestocks production, processing and marketing as well as allied products. Most importantly with the sole aim to unify cooperative farmers and their cooperative bodies nation wide, as well as monitor their activities and seek for their welfare both locally and internationally.
Chief Nwogwugwu further disclosed that for the coming election, Abia Kwara and Niger, are the three states that are eligible to contest for the position of national president.
He, however, commended the efforts of the Governor of Abia state, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, whose contribution towards agriculture has taken Agriculture to another level in the state,thereby, offering him the platform to contest for the national position.
Chief Nwogwugwu also used the opportunity to advocate for financial and material support for farmers who have been affected by the covid 19 pandemic.
