LG Autonomy: Gov Ikpeazu Is A True Democrat—-Chikamnayo

 

 

Abia State Commissioner for Information and Strategy,Barr Eze Chikamnayo has described Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as a true democrat and pacestter saying, Abia under his leadership has many things to show that the state leads in different areas.

 

Chikamnayo who was addressing newsmen in Umuahia said Governor Ikpeazu has demonstrated that he believes in the rule of the people by being the only Governor in Nigeria to conduct local Government Elections for two consecutive times under his tenure.

The Information boss further noted that  Abia scored another first by taking the lead among the committee of states in Nigeria to pass the Alteration of the 1999 Constitution Amendment Bill into law, leading to a full financial and administrative autonomy for the Local Governments.

Recall that the 5th Alteration of the Constitution as passed by the National Assembly requires the Concurrence of at least 2-3 of the 36 states of Assembly inorder to take effect nationwide after receiving presidential assent.

Chikamnayo said: “Governor Okezie Ikpeazu,the rebuilder of Abia is a pacesetter in all ramifications having scored so many firsts.

 

“The fact that the State House of Assembly passed the local government law shows you the mindset of the governor who is the first Governor in the history of Abia State to have conducted local government elections twice in his tenure.

 

“He has shown that he is a democrat and is dedicated to the welfare of the people of Abia State and Nigeria at large.

“I want to applaud our governor for showing that he is on the side of the people in every issue that arises in our polity”.

While also applauding the Abia state House of Assembly for being a true representative of the masses, the Commissioner urged other State Houses of Assembly to follow suit to enable the president accent to the law as soon as possible for the benefit of the Nigerian masses.

 

Chikamnayo noted that the law when fully operational will enhance democracy, engender more development at the grassroots as well as provide financial independence at the local government level.

 

He added that there are clauses in the law that will control reckless spendings by the leadership of various local governments with its attendant checks and balances.
