Worried about deplorable health conditions of the rural and vulnerable groups in the society, the member representing Ukwa-East State constituency in Abia state House of Assembly (ABHA), Hon. Lewis Obianyi, has organized a free medical outreach for his constituents, with over 500 beneficiaries.
Speaking with Hon. Obianyi, at Akanu Ndoki, Ukwa-East Local Government Area (LGA) Abia State, he lamented that so many people die untimely due to treatable diseases, hence, the need to improve life expectancy of his constituents through the free medical outreach.
The former Chairman, Ukwa-East LGA, explained that the free medical intervention was strategic in helping his constituents understand their health status and to offer free treatments for those diagnosed with hidden ailments.
The lawmaker said: “Many people cannot afford to visit hospitals for their medical conditions mainly due to the high cost of healthcare and that’s why we have decided to bring a relief to our people through this medical intervention.”
Hon. Obianyi who revealed that he is making arrangements to sustain the free medical outreach, enjoined the people to take their medical prescriptions seriously to remain in sound health.
Contributing, the head of the medical team, Dr. Idah Felix Waboso said that the medical outreach is intended to treat people of all age brackets and make referrals where necessary.
Dr. Idah further revealed that the team discovered some cases of Human Immune Virus (HIV) and Tuberculosis (TB) patients who were not on any treatment prior to the medical outreach, adding the team is on top of the situation with contact tracing and other health management procedures.
He urged people to know their HIV status, highlighting that its treatment is free.
In his words: “It is better to know that you’re not positive than to think you are positive”.
The Port-Harcourt based Medical Doctor, called on other political leaders to emulate Hon. Obianyi, adding that the health burden of the rural areas is getting out of hands and requires immediate attention.
