The lawmaker representing Obingwa-West State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly (ABHA), Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr, has been conferred with the “Champion of Democracy 2025” award by Love FM Radio, Umuahia, Abia State.
The recognition, according to Head of News at Love FM, Mrs. Vivian Chima, is in appreciation of Erondu Jnr’s outstanding contributions to democratic development and governance in Abia State and Nigeria at large.
She applauded the legislator for his impactful legislative efforts and consistent support for the underprivileged, describing him as a grassroots politician, a true democrat, and a resilient representative committed to improving lives across the state and Nigeria at large.
In his acceptance speech, Erondu Jnr expressed gratitude to Love FM for the honour and reaffirmed his commitment to his constituents.
The former Chairman, Obingwa Local Government Area (LGA), pledged to continue leveraging his office to uplift lives and promote democratic values.
Congratulating Abians and Nigerians on 26 years of uninterrupted democracy, the former Director Enyimba FC, emphasized that even the most flawed democratic system remains preferable to military rule. He decried electoral malpractice as a major threat to democracy and called on the government to ensure electoral integrity moving forward.
He also urged the government to uphold the rule of law and encouraged citizens to actively engage in governance by holding leaders accountable and giving constructive feedback.
Speaking on his legislative agenda, Elder Erondu Jnr highlighted his proposed bills—H.A.B. 23, H.A.B. 24, H.A.B. 25.
He said H.A.B. 23 seeks to provide free pre-natal and post-natal care for pregnant women, with the aim of drastically reducing maternal and child mortality rates and improving breastfeeding practices.
On H.A.B. 24, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Bill, he said that it aims to establish a legal framework that mandates companies to fairly compensate host communities.
He noted that similar models have yielded positive results in Ebonyi State, particularly in quarry-hosting areas, and expressed hope that the bill would help ease tensions in oil-rich communities like Owaza in Ukwa-West LGA of Abia state.
Erondu Jnr further enjoined Nigerians to keep faith in the nation’s democratic journey, expressing optimism that things would get better by God’s grace.
