Iranian Soccer Fan Set Self Ablaze, Dies

An Iranian girl, Sahar Khodayari, who set herself on fire, last week is dead.

She set herself ablaze in Tehran, the capital of Iran, after her trial for attempting to enter a football stadium, disguising as a man, was postponed.

This incident was widely followed by Iranians across the globe, who use the hash tag ‘blue girl’ a reference to the color of her favorite team.

After she was detained for three days, she was released. She waited for six months for her trial in court.

When she appeared in court, she was informed that her case has been postponed because the trial judge had a family emergency.

Reports claim she overheard someone saying that if she is found guilty, she will be sentenced to between six months to two years in prison.

She set herself ablaze in front of the court and later died in hospital.

Since 1981, women in Iran have been banned from watching men sporting event in stadium. This ban was temporarily lifted during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which was streamed in a stadium in Tehran.
