Int’l Youth Day: Lawmaker Erondu Jnr Calls for Bold Reforms, Youth Investments

The Chairman, House Committee on Public Service in the Abia State House of Assembly (ABHA), Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr, has called for bold policy reforms to prioritize the welfare and development of Nigerian youth.

In a Press statement issued by his Spokesperson, George Egejuru in commemoration of 2025 International Youth Day, the lawmaker who represents Obingwa-West State Constituency described this year’s theme; “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond,” as a powerful reminder of the role of youth in driving sustainable development through innovation at the grassroots level.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s over 90 million young people remain its most vital resource, stressing the need for intentional investments in education, healthcare, mental wellness, and economic empowerment.

“Nigeria’s youth must not just be seen as leaders of tomorrow—they are leaders of today.
“It’s time we restructured our priorities to give them the support they need to thrive, not merely survive”, he stated.

The former Chairman, Obingwa Local Government Area (LGA) decried that several youth-led initiatives across the country are yet to translate sufficiently, global SDG goals into local action—from community-based education programs to climate-smart solutions.

The Uhie-born legislator who urged government at all levels to channel more resources toward youth welfare, encouraged young people to upscale their tech skills for success in a rapidly evolving digital economy.

In his words: “When government-backed platforms are available, it is up to the youth to step forward and use them to shape their future.”

While acknowledging persistent socio-economic challenges such as unemployment, inequality, and infrastructural deficits, Erondu Jnr advised youth not to be discouraged, but to remain resolute in their aspirations.

“Your creativity, resilience, and vision are the seeds of Nigeria’s transformation.
“Now is the time to rise above limitations and lead with innovation”, he added.

To further harness youth potential, the former Director Enyimba FC, advocated for:

The establishment of youth councils and advisory boards at state and local levels; expansion of digital skills and green economy training; Increased funding for youth entrepreneurship; Greater inclusion of youth in policy-making and governance processes.

He maintained that the International Youth Day must serve as a wake-up call for government, Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and institutions to do more than just acknowledge young people.

“We must go beyond speeches and ceremonial observances.
“Prioritizing youth is a strategic pathway to securing Nigeria’s future”, he further noted.
