As Nigeria joins their counterparts all over the world to mark the International Women’s Day Celebration, the Federal and State lawmakers have been called upon to expedite action in the passage and domestication of the Gender Equality Right Bill.
Recall that March 8th of every year is celebrated globally as International Women’s Day to highlight the importance of Women and their contribution to Nations building in every society.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s Women’s day celebration, “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, The Director, women and Gender Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs and social Development, Mrs Chinyere Nwogwugwu, identified gender equality as prerequisite for a sustainable development in any society
According to Nwogwugwu, women cannot achieve their goals and impact positively to the development of the Nation if they are continually pulled down.
She pointed out that the male folk are dominating in every sector of the nation’s economy which makes it impossible for women to contribute their quota to the socioeconomic development of the country.
On her part, the Permanent Secretary Abia State Ministry of Justice, Lady Uzoamaka Ikonne, frowned at the rejection of the Gender equality right bill by the National Assembly recently considering the challenges of rape, rejection, domestic violence and abuse women face on daily basis in Nigeria.
She called for concerted efforts by all to ensure that women rights are adequately protected and given equal opportunities to contribute in the society.
