The wife of Abia State Governor Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu, has been awarded the Excellent Service Award to humanity by the Women Wing of the Abia State Town Union’s Association, Lagos State.
The recognition came at the Lagos State branch association during an empowerment programme of the down trodden held recently at the National Stadium Surulere, Lagos.
Receiving the award, Mrs. Ikpeazu, said that empowerment programme by the association to the down trodden is a welcome development.
According to her, “this is what we have been encouraging in Abia State, every woman should engage herself even if it is in petty trading to help ease the burden of the family to the man of the house”.
Mrs. Ikpeazu, also explained that the Abia State Government led by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, is interested in empowering women and the youths but advised that every mother should be friendly with her daughter to understand her emotions, maintains peace and promote same at all times.
She however encouraged mothers to ensure that their daughters know their genotype before getting married to avoid the scourge of sickle cell anemia.
Speaking, the Chairman on the occasion Dr. Chimaobi Anyaso, said that the significance of the event is that it is about the empowerment of the down trodden in the society.
This, Anyaso, maintained will go along way to alleviate poverty and called on well meaning Abians to emulate the Governor’s wife by supporting the initiative.
Earlier, the President of the Association, Mrs. Nkechinyere Alaribe, explained that the association was formed in 1993, through the ingenuity of the founding fathers led by professor Joe Irukwu.
Alaribe, said that the main aim of the women wing of the association is to bring together all Abia indigenes in Lagos under one umbrella to maintain their cultural heritage.
She expressed that the association has organized seminars, vocational trainings, medical outreach to lift the down trodden out of poverty but acknowledges the challenge of the association to be lack of vehicle for easy movement to reach out to those in the rural areas.
Others who were recognized during the programmes were, Eze Hyacinth Nwabueze Ohazulike, Engr. Emma Ekwuribe, Mrs. Elizabeth Omowumi Nwaeze, Barrister. Ngozi Ekeoma, Mrs. Clara Adetuyi and chief Mrs. Nkechinyere Alaribe.
