Wife of Abia State Governor Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu.
The Wife of Abia State Governor Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu, has been recognized with the ‘Making A Difference’ award by the United Kingdom’s Westminster Foundation for Democracy, for her passion and immense contributions towards Abia state government signing into law the violence against persons prohibition act(Vappa law) into law.
The WFD, a department of the British Foreign Affairs Ministry said that the law has giving protection to women and the girl child and has also encouraged many to speak out when they are being assaulted.
Country Representative of WFD, Mr. Adebowale Olorunmola, described its men focus as supporting good governance, democratic institutions and promoting inclusive governance around the world.
Mr. Olorunmola, who was represented by the Country State Expert, Mrs. Mary Ikoku, said that based on the policy document of the organisation, recent happenings such as the lock down caused by the Covid-19 pandemic further exacerbated the cases of violence against women, particularly sexual violence.
The Vappa law already signed by most state will help to significantly reduce abuse and other forms of violence against women and we are recognizing the wife of Abia Governor, Mrs. Ikpeazu, for the numerous role she has been playing to ensure the protection of women and the girl child in the society.
Receiving the award at the Aba Lodge of the State Government, Mrs. Ikpeazu, expressed her gratitude to the organisation, adding that the award is an invitation to do more.
According to her, “it is a good thing to be part of this group and I assure you that all the recommendations listed in your policy document will be adhered to, once again thank you for honouring me” Mrs. Ikpeazu said.
