In an effort geared towards reinvigorating modern technological advancement in basic education,Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has officially commissioned the Abia Model Basic Schools and kick-off of the Multimedia Digital Teaching programme, first of it’s kind in the state.
The Abia Model Basic Schools Concept, a flagship project of Governor Ikpeazu, is a global education best practice which takes into consideration the provision of conducive teaching and learning environment where school teachers and pupils reside in the school and is packaged to foster boarding and controlled school system in Abia state.
Some of the components of the programme include: Multi Media Digital Machines, Modem School Electronic Library, ICT Facilities, Super -High Speed Internet Facilities with 30 Computers, Magnetic White Boards, school furniture, teachers and principal quarters among others.
Speaking at the ceremony held at Osusu Amaukwa Model School,Obingwa LGA, Governor Ikpeazu who noted that the state government places premium on the education of all Abia children,described education as important and the foundation of all learning adding that it would continue to remain relevant even in the years to come.
He said the decision to set up Model Basic Schools across the state is to give an example of what an ideal school should look like with teacher student infrastructure and as well acquaint Abia pupils with modern technologies in line with global best practices.
“That is why we decided to introduce digital and multi media training platform that can teach over one hundred and twenty subjects Including crafts, tailoring, and everything you can think of. Everything you can think of is imbedded in those computers.
“Our expectation today is that in the next two or three years time, the products of the model schools will shine forth on Nigeria and beyond and take first positions anywhere they find themselves”, Ikpeazu said.
He encouraged the teachers to acquaint themselves with how to operate the equipments for effective teaching.
Ikpeazu who also used the occasion to launch Modern Lawn Mowing Machines for use in the school,said the lawn mowers were procured by government in a bid not to subject the children to manual grass cutting adding that more of the equipments would be procured and deployed to various schools across the state.
He therefore urged the teachers and school management to see the equipments as their properties and handle them with care.
In his address earlier, the Commissioner for Basic Education, Chief Ukwu Rocks Emma commended the Governor for laying a solid and strategic foundation that would move the education sector from analogue to digital process.
The Chairman Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) Mr Josiah Anonaba said the model schools replicated in the 3 senatorial zones including Abayi Umuocham Osisioma, Ossah Umuahia North and Ohafia LGAs are designed to provide child friendly environment, ICT based instructional instruments that can expose pupils to multimedia learning experiences.
In his remarks, the principal for the Junior Secondary Section of the School, thanked Governor Ikpeazu for his dexerity in the education sector which he said has led to unprecedented development in the education sector.
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu thereafter proceeded to Umuajuju Isiala Ngwa South where he performed the ground breaking ceremony for the building of a Smart School.
