Ikpeazu Commends State’s House of Assembly for Speedy Passage of Gender Base Violence Bill into Law.

Abia State Governor’s Wife, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu has commended the 7th Abia House of Assembly led by Engr. Chinedum Orji, for the speedy passage of the bill, Violence Against Persons Prohibition into law.

The passage of the bill into law, she said called for greater responsibility on everyone to play a role in curbing the menace of violence against women and the girl child.

The Governor’s wife expressed the state government boldness to end violence against all in an event tagged Orange the World Concept at her Government House Office in Umuahia, with the sub theme Generation Equality Stand Against Violence.

According to her, “this night of orange the world is to amplify our voices against gender base violence as this year theme called for togetherness in the fight against abuse of the women and the girl child.

Recall that last year, the Governor’s wife led VHF campaign with other coalition groups to the Abia State Judiciary, State House of Assembly, the Police to press for a law against gender based violence.

In her speech, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Ukachi Amala, said that the ministry is working together to ensure that the goal is achieved.

Amala, questioned the attraction of children being raped adding that it is unacceptable and expressed hope that the law having been passed will checkmate the activities rapist and other violence meted against women and the girl child.

While the State FIDA, President, Barrister Ogbo Ehimere, said that they want a society where women will no longer be seen as object of sex and thanked the Abia First Lady for setting up Gender Based Violence Discussion Desk, her National Council of Women Society counterparts, Dame Amarachi Dede, Nigeria Labour Congress Woman president, Comrade Mercy Okezie, insist that the strides that has been achieved by the state government needs to be maintained.

However, the vice president of Vicar Hope Foundation, Dr. Edith Nwosu, expressed that the foundation’s focus are on areas greater need that is why VHF is partnering with agencies, ministries and other civil society organizations to educate the girl child.
