Igwe donates palliative materials to Umunneochi LGA, urges compliance with anti-Covid-19 guidelines

The lawmaker representing Umunneochi State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Okey Igwe, has donated relief materials to his constituents to cushion the effects of the lockdown, occasioned by concerted efforts of the state government to prevent Coronavirus from spreading into Abia.

The items, some of which would also save the people from contracting the coronavirus, included food items, hand sanitizers, toilet soaps and Personal Protective Equipments (PPE).

Igwe said while distributing the materials, that the indigents and the vulnerables at the various Wards, should be frontline beneficiaries and therefore advocated “bottom-up” sharing formula.

He handed over the materials to members of the Transition Committee (Councillors) representing the various Wards in Umunneochi and Presidents-General of Town Unions at the Nkwoagu Isuochi Council Headquarters of Umunneochi Local Government Area Saturday, in line with the lockdown guidelines which frowns at crowding.

During the brief ceremony, the lawmaker told his constituents that his donations were in support of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s interventions and encouraged more Umunneochi citizens to also donate in order to save the people from starving while the lockdown lasts.

Igwe urged his constituents to comply with measures put in place by the Abia State government to avert the spread of the rampaging Coronavirus (Covid-19) into the state.

He also enjoined the people to religiously observe all the protocols issued by health experts and the World Health Organisation which help to reduce the chances of anyone contracting the infectious coronavirus.

Igwe further encouraged the Transition Committee members and Presidents-General to domesticate and intensify their sensitization efforts by passing down to the Wards, messages contained in the various protocols and guidelines issued by government meant to promote personal hygiene.

“I enjoin you to continue to adhere to the lockdown guidelines for our collective safety,” the lawmaker added.

A resource person who is also a medical doctor, Dr. A.I.O. Uwaezuoke, amplified Igwe’s message as he used the forum to educate the people on what individuals should observe and what they should not do to avoid contracting Covid-19.

Chairman of Umunneochi Transition Committee, Hon. Matthew Ibe, expressed gratitude to Igwe for his milk of human kindness, while Chief Akusuomba, on behalf of the Town Union Presidents, said they appreciated the lawmaker’s gesture and assured that the items would be used judiciously while the suggested sharing formula would be strictly adhered to.
