Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun on Tuesday met with Senator Abdul-Azeez Yaradua at Force Headquarters, Abuja, to discuss provisions of the proposed Electoral Reform Bill, which seeks to introduce early voting for police officers and other security personnel deployed on election duty.
Senator Yaradua, accompanied by a delegation including Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, and Cynthia Mbamalu, Director of Programmes at Yiaga Africa, presented the draft bill to the IGP for review, requesting professional input to ensure the legislation reflects operational realities while safeguarding electoral integrity.
Itodo commended the police for improved electoral security in recent off-cycle elections in Edo and Ondo States, crediting proactive strategies for peaceful and credible polls. He also lauded Egbetokun’s reform-focused leadership and recent awards.
In response, the IGP thanked Senator Yaradua and Yiaga Africa for their advocacy, reaffirming the police’s commitment to working with stakeholders to secure fair and transparent elections. Flanked by Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Egbetokun stressed that collaboration between law enforcement and civil society is vital for credible electoral reforms.
