Hope Rises For Victims Of Gender Based Violence As Rivers Govt Promises Medical, Legal Aid

In response to the increased and alarming statistics of sexual and gender based violence in Rivers, the states’ Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation has promised to liaise with the relevant organisations inorder to get counselling, medical and legal aid to victims of sexual abuses and gender based violence in the state.

Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mrs Inime Aguma, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday,; encouraged residents of the state to report all gender based violence, sexual abuse, domestic violence and other forms of violence to those hotlines for prompt attention.

According to her, “Our ministry has set up hotlines and other collaborative efforts, aimed at fast tracking immediate response for victims of sexual abuse and other forms of gender based violence.

“The ministry is working in collaboration with other organisations to provide counselling, medical help, psychological help, legal aid and prosecution of offenders.

“Our partners include; Doctors without Borders with phone numbers – (0903355 5455 and 07058890060-2); International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) with phone number – (08037066670) and Rivers State Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation – (07040410523 and 07040410081).
